Should have been a contender, issue 6

Today I will be considering another long-term Academy member.  This one never saw too much action or development.  He was another fan creation and sometimes, the fans can make some pretty good designs.  This would be Bobb Kohan, aka Crystal Kid.

Crystal Kid has the power of crystal generation, but  he must concentrate in order to maintain the constructs.  We never saw him in action much, but it appeared he mainly used this ability defensively to encase opponents in crystal or create shields.  I think he actually might have been one of the first characters to have a crystal generation power.  Bobb is a bit of a blank slate but because his creator was from Canada, I feel like Bobb should be from that area too.

While mainly shown in the Academy, we learn he briefly became a member during the 5 year gap but was eventually captured and experimented on by the Dominators.  When he is freed, he is not offered Legion membership and joins the ranks of the Subs as deputized operatives. We don't see him again until the Retroboot, where he is in the Academy again and graduates with his classmates Lamprey and Nightwind.

Visually, his powers aren't much different than Polar Boy's, but perhaps there is more to his constructs that could be expanded on.  Ice is hard but is prone to melting and breaking.  Bobb's crystals may be much harder. His crystals are very reminiscent of quartz in their illustrations and quartz is harder than steel. Topaz is harder yet and still retains a very "crystal-like" appearance.  Quartz however is also known to be heat resistant and not a good conductor of electricity, so he could create some pretty effective shields with his power.  Potentially his powers would be pretty effective in creating weapons such as a sword and shield, gauntlets, or truncheons for close quarter combat.  The question would be of course if his crystal still required concentration or he would be able to create constructs that broke down over time.

Crystal Kid would be an easy character to do more with as he has not really been explored. Perhaps someone will give him a chance in the future.
